A cochlear implant (bionic ear) is an electronic device designed to provide enhanced sound perception and better speech understanding for children and adults with significant hearing loss.
A cochlear implant has an external component, a sound processor and a headpiece as well as an internal part ( electrode array) which is implanted by surgery. It works by bypassing the damaged or missing hair cells in the cochlea and stimulating the hearing nerve directly.
